THE CRITTERVILLE STORY

A silence filled the air as Hardy walked the deserted streets of this ol’ mining town.  He remembered back, not too long ago, when the town was filled with shootin’ and hollerin’.  He also remembered staying in a hollowed out part of an old tree stump at the other end of the street near the hotel.

Yes the miners left this town just about as fast as they built it.  Hardy thought how nice it was to roam the town and not be worried about a runaway stagecoach or some upset miners taking target practice at the nearest star in the sky.  Hardy was very happy about being the only living soul in this town.  He was even considering moving out of the dingy dirty stump and into one of those fancy rooms at the Rodentra Royale.

Just as Hardy was feeling pretty good about the whole situation life smacked him right in the face as he saw a not too small family of pigs moving there stuff into one of the abandoned wagons in front of the hotel.  These just weren’t your normal everyday pigs either. They were from Guinea or some sort of place like that.

Hardy did his best to make them move somewhere else but they were just the friendliest pigs you ever saw.  In fact, they were so friendly that Hardy soon stayed locked up in his stump for days at a time just so he wouldn’t be too friendly back at them.  Finally, one day when all was quiet Hardy crept out of his little tree house to see if his new neighbors had left.  He hadn’t heard a peep from them all day!

Well, let’s just say that Hardy didn’t have to worry about those new friends from Guinea anymore.  He found a whole bunch of new friends from all over the world; like the nice little family from Siberia.  He also noticed a couple of weasels ferreting around the place. They were nice enough but pretty nosey.

Who could forget the nice young couple from Holland with the funny ears and long legs?  They were right next to some odd little ones who kept waggin’ their tail anytime someone talked to them, which of course Hardy refused to do.

And just when Hardy thought he had seen enough he turned and saw that all these new residents had the nerve to name this new village.  However, he wasn’t too surprised when he read the name, “CRITTERVILLE”!

Nowadays you can still see Hardy once in awhile taking a peek from his stump at the other end of town but don’t try talkin’ bout the weather or any such thing.  He just likes to go back in his wooden home and dream about the time he walked along Critterville in utter tranquility.
